Chennai: Renowned for its great taste and sweetness, Banganapalle mango has now received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This esteemed acknowledgement formally names Andhra Pradesh as the exclusive source of this famous fruit, therefore highlighting its importance in the field of agriculture and mango farm land.
Following an official application made by the Horticulture Commissioner of Andhra Pradesh, O P Gupta, the Registrar of Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai, gave the GI tag. This title not only emphasises the mango's close ties to its area but also supports its standing as "the king of fruits."
Rich and legendary in Andhra Pradesh, the Banganapalle mango also known by several other names, including Beneshan, Baneshan, Benishan, Chappatai, Safeda, and various regional variants like Banaganapalli and Banginapalli has been cultivated for more than a century. Celebrated for their unique and distinctive qualities, this fruit has light-spotted skin that accentuates its visual appeal, an oblong stone that affects its texture, a thin seed that improves its eating experience, and sparse, soft fibre that adds to its smooth, melt-in-the-mouth quality.
These distinctive qualities together produce an unmatched taste and texture that has earned the Banganapalle mango a particular place in the hearts of mango aficionados worldwide. This makes it a top and most sought-after variety among mango lovers.
The Kurnool district, more especially Banaganapalle, Paanyam, and Nandyal mandals, is where the Banganapalle mango mostly comes from. Long known for their perfect growth circumstances, these areas help to explain why the mango is so superior. Apart from the main centres, Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra areas, as well as Khammam, Mahabubnagar, Rangareddy, Medak, and Adilabad districts in adjacent Telangana, are also recognised as secondary centres of origin.
The Banganapalle mango has been painstakingly recorded by the Andhra Pradesh government both geographically and historically. This includes references to historical documents such as the "war fund seal (Banganapally-State Madras War Fund Seal)," so supporting the mango's long-standing connection with the area. With imagery of farmers representing the agricultural pride of the area and the phrase "Banganappalle Mangoes of Andhra Pradesh," a new logo featuring a vivid yellow mango has been unveiled to symbolise this legacy.
Banganapalle mangoes have a significant economic benefit for the nearby people. An affidavit filed in 2011 by I Rani Kumudini, the then Andhra Pradesh Commissioner of Horticulture, claims that about 7.68 lakh families grow these mango farms. This great participation emphasises the importance of the fruit for both the local way of life and the larger agricultural economy.
With around 5,500 tonnes exported yearly to nations including the US and the UK, the banana mangoes are clearly visible in worldwide markets. This worldwide demand helps to explain an amazing yearly turnover of almost Rs 1,461 crore. Alone at Rs 20.68 crore, export earnings highlight the economic worth of the mango and its part in boosting agricultural exports of India.
Under Intellectual Property Rights and the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, the GI tag certifies that the geographical origin of a product determines its quality, features, and reputation in direct line. This sticker not only proves their source but also improves the marketability of banana mangoes. The GI classification guarantees farmers and producers greater pricing, ensuring that the special qualities of the mango are appreciated and rewarded on the worldwide scene.
By guaranteeing that only mangoes from the approved areas can bear the GI tag, the GI tag also helps to safeguard the reputation of the Banganapalle mango and stop imitation or abuse of the product. This protection encourages regional sustainable agriculture and helps to preserve the high standards connected with the Banganapalle mango.
The GI classification given to the Banganapalle mango in Andhra Pradesh reaches a major turning point honouring the legacy of the fruit and its remarkable quality. This appreciation not only respects the agricultural knowledge of the area but also helps the local economy by improving market value and worldwide awareness. Banganapalle mangoes still enthral consumers all around, and the GI badge is evidence of their unmatched quality as well as the great cultural value of Andhra Pradesh's mango farming customs. With this great respect, the Banganapalle mango is ready to become even more beloved and sought-after fruit worldwide, therefore guaranteeing its legacy for next generations.
